Ludhiana: The Administration has pulled up its socks for ensuring smooth and hassle free procurement of wheat in the district in wake of the prevailing circumstances due to the Coronavirus pandemic. 

Chairing a meeting with the officers of procurement agencies and Aartiyas at Bachat Bhawan, the Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma  reiterated the firm commitment of the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to procure every single grain of the farmers.

He said that elaborate arrangements would be made to facilitate the farmers during the procurement of grains.

Deputy Commissioner said that as compared to last year’s purchase of 8.99 lakh metric ton, in current marketing season 9.00 lakh metric ton is expected in the grain markets. 

Sharma said that farmer would not be allowed to face any sort of problem while selling their produce.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that besides procurement a proper mechanism has been evolved for the proper transportation and storage of the grains. 

He directed the chiefs of all procurement agencies to personally supervise the wheat procurement operations ensuring prompt and smooth lifting of wheat as per their allotted share of procurement. 

Sharma also instructed the officers to make requisite arrangement of power, sheds for the farmers, potable water supply and equipment to monitor the quality of wheat in each procurement centre.

He added that at present there are 107 designated grain markets besides 294 temporary yards have been set up in the district to procure the grains in view of the pandemic. 

He said that this would help in reducing rush of farmers in mandi on one hand through pass system implemented last year and maintaining social distance during procurement on the other. 

The Deputy Commissioner said that along with procurement of grains, checking the spread of Corona Virus was also the top priority of the state government and the district administration and assured the people that the golden grains of the food growers would be procured and lifted at every cost.
