Chandigarh, July 18, 2016: Speaking in Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Green Revolution, organized by Dr. Amrik Singh Cheema Foundation Trust here today, the Governor of Punjab, Haryana and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Prof. Kaptan ingh Solanki said that the agriculture is the backbone of India and even today, over 60% of our population is directly dependant on agriculture for its livelihood. He said there were many challenges that our farmers and other stake holders like researchers, extension workers, face while working in farm sector.
Congratulating founder members of Dr. Amrik Singh Cheema Foundation Trust for their endeavour to make people remember the chrishma of Green Revolution entering the 50th year of Golden Jubilee, the Governor said that Green Revolution was the brain child of Agriculture experts, one amongst whome was Dr. Amrik Singh Cheema, the then Agriculture Commissioner Government of India, whose death Anniversary is also being commemorated today.
Prof. Solanki said that some lives their life for themselves and some lives for their families, but some lives their live for their families and for a noble cause. He said real homage to Dr. Amrik Singh Cheema was that we should also start living our lives for a cause to create a healthy society and strong nation.
Giving reference from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Gobind Singh Ji who lived their lives for others, Prof. Solanki said on Guru Gobind Singh ji directions Baba Banda Singh Bahadur fought and sacrifice his life for the people.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Solanki said that the magic of Green Revolution changed the face of Indian Agriculture and the production increased manifold in the following years. He said we have the potential, knowledge, expertise and professional capability and we must pool all these to achieve better results in the agriculture field. Our agriculture scientists and experts must educate our farmers on the application of new cost effective technologies, quality seeds, timely use of various inputs, including fertilizers and insecticides for getting higher yield in different crops.
Prof Solanki further said that Agriculture development, to my mind, is a core area and a key to success for our national agenda of prosperity and inclusive growth. It is economically, socially and culturally important for the nation.
The Governor, presented life time achievement Award to Mr SS Rajsekhar, Managing Trustee, National Agro Foundation. He also released the souvenir on the occasion.
Prominent amongst others who spoke on the occasion included, Punjab Agriculture Minister, Jathedar Tota Singh ,Mr. Felix NGOMA, Ambassador of Republic of Congo to India, Mr Jagdeep Singh Cheema, Chairman, Dr. Amrik Singh Cheema Foundation Trust, Dr. Gurbachan Singh, Chairman, Agriculture Scientists Recruitment Board, Dr. BS Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, Punjab Agriculture University and Mrs.Baani Cheema, Executive Director of the Trust.
