Alumni Talk by Internationally renowned scientist Dr. Sharanjot Saini

Chandigarh, July 25, 2024: The Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh hosted an Alumni Talk by Internationally renowned scientist Dr. Sharanjot Saini, Associate Professor at Department of Biochemistry, Medical College of Georgia, USA. The title of the talk was ‘Exosome based therapies for aggressive prostate cancer’. The program was supported by DBT-BUILDER grant sanction by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India. The Chairperson of the department Prof. Amarjit Singh Naura introduced the speaker. He highlighted that Dr. Saini is an Alumus of the department and has earned a worldwide distinction for her work on cancer particularly prostate cancer. Her strong expertise in the field can be gauged from the fact she has around 85 international publications to her credit. She has made multiple novel discoveries and currently her lab is working on exploring exosomes based therapies against prostate cancer. Dr. Saini  shared that about 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. But each man's risk of prostate cancer can vary, based on his age, race/ethnicity, and other factors. For example, prostate cancer is more likely to develop in older men. She shared interesting data which indicates that exosome based therapies might offer new treatment strategies against aggressive form of prostate cancer. In the end, an exclusive interaction with the students was held, where Dr. Saini shared her experiences during academic journey. Prof Dipti Sareen presented a vote of thanks.
