Ludhiana, December 5, 2018: Brachytherapy, a type of radiation therapy used for the treatment of cancer was launched in the City of Ludhiana at American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday.

The facility was inaugurated by Sri Prem Kumar Gupta, Secretary, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana. Speaking on the occasion, Sri Gupta said, “It is indeed a great pleasure that American Oncology Institute has introduced this facility here at DMCH. This will indeed be of great benefit for cancer patients in Ludhiana and the region of Punjab. With the launch ofBrachytherapy, comprehensive cancer care with advanced technology is now available in Ludhiana at American Oncology Institute at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital for treatment of a wide range of cancers.”

In India, cancer is the second most common cause of death. It is estimated that close to 4 million people are living with cancer and over 10 lakh new cases are registered every year in India. Alarmingly, 71 per cent of deaths happen due to cancer in the age group of 30-69 years.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shibaji Chattopadhyaya, Zonal Director, American Oncology Institute said, “Brachytherapy is sometimes called as internal radiation and is a highly effective in treating many types of cancer including prostate, cervix, endometrium, breast, skin, bronchi, esophagus, head and neck. Brachytherapy gives a higher level of accuracy in comparison to conventional surgery. I am glad that over the years, the extensive healthcare experience of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital and the advanced cancer care expertise of AOI, under one roof is providing American university standards of cancer treatment to the population of Ludhiana and the neighboring states as well.”

Dr Shibaji also added that since 18 months of American Oncology Institute’s operations at Ludhiana, more than 7,000 patients have shown confidence in us by getting treatment over here which gives us the motivation for moving further by adding more treatment facilities. AOI provides integrated cancer care that is powered by clinical excellence, world class technology as well as international pathways and protocols, best quality treatment in cancer care across its locations in India. American Oncology Institute gives utmost priority to understand the needs of the patients, collaborate with them and create a relaxed and comfortable environment for treatment.

Dr Sandhya Sood, Sr Radiation Oncologist, American Oncology Institute, Ludhiana said, “Brachytherapy allows a clinician to use a higher total dose of radiation to treat a smaller area and in a shorter time than is possible with external beam radiation treatment. The main advantage of Brachytherapy is that the radiation source is within the tumor, which makes it possible to deliver high dose of radiation to the tumor with accuracy and lesser side effects.”

Dr Neeraj Bishnoi, Facility Director, AOI, Ludhiana said, “Brachytherapy is a minimally invasive procedure with a shorter treatment time. This coupled with minimal blood loss, minimal post-operative pain and quicker recovery time and fewer visits to the hospital makes it cost effective. It is mostly done as a day care procedure and requires minimal or no hospital stay.”
