Chandigarh, July 14, 2023: Faculty members, students, and staff members of Panjab University, Chandigarh, applaud the successful launch of the Chandrayaan 3. The mission involves the launch of a spacecraft weighing around 3900 kg with one of India's most powerful rockets, LVM3 M4, a modified form of GSLV rocket. The payload consists of a propulsion module, a lander, and a rover. The propulsion module will carry the lander and the rover from the Earth's orbit to the Moon's orbit at 100 km altitude in due course of time. The lander will make a soft landing on Moon eventually and the rover will move out on the Moon's surface to carry out scientific objectives that include measurements of the elemental and chemical composition of the Moon along with the lunar seismic studies.
Panjab University, Chandigarh, is involved in the teaching and research of Space Sciences and technology. A research group is involved in developing theoretical models to understand the origin and evolution of the planets and their satellites. The group has recently developed numerical models to understand the origin and evolution of the Moon. This forms the thesis work of a research scholar.
