Aristotle Society of Life Sciences, Department of Botany and Zoology, LKC organized Epoch-2022 

Jalandhar, May 12, 2022: Aristotle Society of Life Sciences, Department of Botany and Zoology, LKC organized Epoch-2022 recently. A one day workshop on ‘Sustainable Living’ was held where there was an interactive lecture followed by practical demonstrations on ‘Waste to Wealth’ were showcased for the benefit of the students and the staff of the college. Prof. Jaswinder Kaur and Dr. Gagandeep Kaur welcomed the guests by presenting potted medicinal plants.
The guest speaker, Dr. K.S. Thind, Cane Advisor, Sugarfed, Punjab and Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, GNDU, during his presentation, emphasized that climate change at global level and climate volatility at local level were affecting all the spheres of life. He highlighted that individual effort was most crucial to tackle the adverse effects arising due to changing climate. He exhorted the students to take responsibilities for improving their environment as an individual. This should be followed by initiatives for organizing small groups of like-minded students in their societies or colonies, to make everybody aware of emerging challenges. The speaker drew upon his life-time experience in field of agriculture and enlightened the students about sustainable agricultural practices, with special focus resource conservation in paddy cultivation including post-harvest management of rice straw. He appreciated the efforts of the Department of Zoology and Botany to bring different organizations like Green friends, Green sparrows, Sukhmani Self Help Group and young entrepreneur Miss Anterpreet Kaur on one platform. For sustaining the under grounding irrigation water Dr. Jugraj Singh, Senior Scientist, Department of Soil and Water engineering, PAU Ludhiana highlighted the various technologies for saving these fast depleting natural resources. Lately, he visited the rain water harvesting pits in the college and gave some useful tips on improving and maintaining them. Prof. Jasreen Kaur, Dean, Academic Affairs, as chief-guest of the function, lauded the relevance of the theme and the effort put-in by the department in disseminating socially meaningful ideas. She also conveyed the message of the Principal Dr. Gurpinder Singh Samra that concrete and concerted steps on individual level need to be taken for the protection of environment. The college, being aware of its responsibility, is always ready to play its part and supports all such programmes and activities organized by individuals and organizations at Lyallpur Khalsa College.
The students enthusiastically participated in Power-point competitions and shared their valuable, innovative ideas on themes of ‘Earth: A sustainable planet’ and ‘Sustainable life-style practices’. In ‘Innovative use of waste matter’ competition students displayed various items made from paper waste, plastic waste or any other waste material. .
Hands-on training in the afternoon session included 3 stalls by resource persons. Jasdeep Kaur and Reshu from Green Friends demonstrated the production of Dish-washing and tiles-cleaning liquid from citrus fruits peels, besides bio-decomposition of kitchen waste to produce organic compost. Khushi from Sukhmani Self-Help Group, Nawanshahr displayed the articles of handicraft from waste as well as natural fibres, organic spices, home-made phenyl etc. Anterpreet Kaur, a young Paper-mache enthusiast, demonstrated techniques of creating decorative gift articles from used paper. Ramanpreet Kaur from Green Sparrow project also highlighted the efforts the organization was making towards empowerment of young women form the economically weaker section through making products out of worn out clothes and other items. Stage was conducted by Dr. Upma Arora, Dr. Heminder Singh and Prof. Surbjit Singh. Competitive events were judged by Prof. Arunjeet Kaur, Dr, Navjot Kaur and Dr. Geetanjali Moudgil.
The valedictory session included distribution of prizes and a vote of thanks by Head of Department, Prof Jaswinder Kaur.
