Ludhiana, June 9, 2024: On getting feedback from local residents, MP (Rajya Sabha) Sanjeev Arora has taken up the serious issue of underage drinking with DGP, Punjab and Commissioner of Police (CP), Ludhiana as well. He has written letters to both of DGP and CP, seeking urgent action required to address underage drinking in the city.
Arora wrote that he would like to express his deep concern regarding the rising cases of underage drinking and driving in Ludhiana. This is a serious issue that not only poses a threat to the health and well-being of our youth but also contributes to a rise in anti-social behaviour and crime. He added a recent Pune incident is an unpleasant example.
He urged upon both DGP and CP to take immediate and strict action to curb this alarming trend. This should involve increased vigilance by law enforcement agencies over bars, restaurants, clubs, liquor vends, and any other public places that may allow or serve alcohol to minors within the jurisdiction of Ludhiana.
Arora mentioned some specific measures to the problem in his letters. Regarding strengthening of enforcement, he suggested to instruct law enforcement personnel to conduct regular inspections of establishments selling or serving alcohol. Strict penalties should be imposed on those found violating the law by serving to underage customers.
For raising awareness, Arora suggested to initiate public awareness campaigns to educate both young people and the general public about the dangers of underage drinking. These campaigns should highlight the legal consequences, health risks, and potential for addiction associated with underage alcohol consumption.
Further suggesting, he mentioned in his letters that with a view to engage stakeholders, collaborate with the hospitality industry, educational institutions, and community organizations to develop a comprehensive strategy to address underage drinking. This could involve training for bartenders and servers on identifying fake IDs and refusing service to minors, as well as educational programs in schools and colleges about the dangers of underage drinking.
Arora also emphasised on the need to giving more power to common citizens. He suggested to empowering common citizens by developing mobile apps through which they can click pictures and geotag the area of the offenders thereby helping the law enforcement officials.
He wrote, “I believe that a multi-pronged approach involving stricter enforcement, public awareness initiatives, and collaboration with stakeholders is essential to effectively address this issue.”
Arora hoped that the Ludhiana Police can take decisive action to curb underage drinking and create a safer environment for the youth.
He offered full cooperation and any help required to enforce this issue.
