Arrest made for attacking CMC doctors and staff

Ludhiana, February 25, 2018: On 22nd February 2018, around 6:30 pm, relatives of a deceased patient became enraged and damaged hospital property and attacked the doctors and staff present in the paediatric ward at CMCH, Ludhiana. Following this a complaint was filed by the CMC administration and doctors at the local police station. Around 250 junior doctors from CMC held a peaceful protest against this physical assault on doctors on 23rd evening and asked the local administration and police authorities to arrest the culprits. Upon this police came into swift action and registered a case against the culprits, according to a press release issued by the hospital today.
Further, the release said that the CMC hospital also received staunch support from Residents Doctor Body (CMC), Indian Medical Association (IMA), Ludhiana and local administration and finally, today, on the 25th of February, the culprit was arrested by the local police. The police has taken strict action against the culprit who committed the assault on the doctors in Paediatric ICU of CMCH, Ludhiana under The Punjab protection of Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act 2008 by which the crime is punishable with imprisonment up to 1 year or fine up to Rs.50000 or both.
Dr. William Bhatti, Medical Superintendent thanked the Police Administration, Ludhiana, the local administration, IMA, the Media and Senior and junior doctors body who united together against injustice and crime and set a strong example for the patient and relatives who take law in their hands and disrupt medical services by physically and verbally abusing medical staff and damage hospital property.
