Ludhiana/Chandigarh, December 25, 2012: City police have registered a case of attempt to murder (Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code) against Maninder Singh Johar alias Sunny Goodwill (owner of the Hub, a restaurant  in Ghumar Mandi Area here), Rishi, Aman and a few others in connection with an alleged assault on the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Intelligence,  SS Mand on Monday late night.

Both Sunny Goodwill and Rishi are said to be the Youth Akali leaders.

And the accused Amand is a nephew of Sunny.

As per the initial reports, the accused allegedly beat up Mand following a minor altercation in the restaurant on Tuesday late evening.

Mand sustained fracture in his leg.

Mand was admitted to DMCH, Ludhiana, after the incident. He has already been operated upon in the hospital.

Meanwhile, the ADGP (Intelligence) Hardeep Singh Dhillon addressed a press conference here this evening. He told that Mand alongwith an NRI Paramjit Singh had gone for a dinner in the restaurant.

Further, Dhillon told that a dispute aroused between Paramjit Singh and the hotel staff.

He said Mand intervened in favour of Paramjit Singh.

In between, Mand was pushed following which he fell on the stairs following which he sustained fracture in his leg.

Dhillon told that an FIR had been registered under various Sections of the IPC including 307 (attempt to murder) and the Arms Act against Sunny, Rishi, Aman and other staff members of the restaurant. He said efforts were on to arrest the accused.

On being asked he categorically denied of any kind of political pressure on the police. He told that they were following the policy of zero tolerance in crime cases. He said they were ensuring strict action against all those indulging in criminal activities irrespective of their affiliations with political parties.

Chandigah: Condemning the brutal assault on the AIG Intelligence Ludhiana SS Mand, by one Sunny Goodwill a close associate of Bikram Majithia in full public view, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today warned against demoralising the Punjab Police with such incidents. In a statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder observed, the way the police officers were being treated, by the Akalis in full public view will only demoralise the police, which will have alarming repercussions for the state.

Narrating some recent incidents, he  pointed out, one day an Akali leader kills an ASI, the other day the Akali leaders beat up traffic cop and now a senior police officer of the rank of an SSP has been beaten up in full public view in Ludhiana with his leg broken again by a youth Akali leader close to Bikram Majithia in full public view.

He said, this only vindicated the Congress party’s stand that the goons groomed and patronised by Bikram Majithia have actually run amok and become a law unto themselves. He warned the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that it was still not that late to tame Bikram lest he led the state into anarchy.

The PCC President warned, if the police were demoralised, as there is all possibility with such incidents, there will be total anarchy in Punjab. He pointed out, it took almost 24 hours for the police to register a case in the incident just because the culprits were close to Bikram Majithia.

“If an SSP rank officer cannot get his complaint registered even after having been brutally thrashed in full public view with his leg broken, what will be the plight of a common man?” he asked, while adding, that the case was only registered as a face saving measure.

Capt Amarinder also referred to the fierce encounter between criminals and police in village Mattewal in Majithia assembly segment today in which the criminal gang was led by one Sulakhan Mattewal, again a henchman of Bikram Majithia. He said, while five of his accomplices were arrested, he was made to escape at Majithia’s behest.
