Awareness about commodity derivatives and hedging mechanism
More than 130 students, faculty members and people from industry attended the session
Chandigarh: Most of Indians are aware of equity trading but very few are well informed about trading in commodities. Keeping this in mind, University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised a session on “Awareness about Commodity Derivatives and Hedging Mechanism”. More than 130 students, faculty members and people from industry attended the session.
Prof. Upasna Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS extended welcome to speakers of the webinar, Mr. Sanjay Ghakar, Vice President, Multi Commodity Exchange India Ltd., and S. Prabhakar, Regional Head, Securities Exchange Board of India and Mr. Chander Nath Pandey, MCX . In her address she said commodity trading is mainly done as part of a diversification strategy. Don’t put all eggs in one basket. Investors should invest in shares, bonds, commodities, currencies, etc. to get better returns.
Mr. S. Prabhakar, Regional Director, Securities Exchange of India apprised the audience on Role of SEBI, mandate of SEBI to protect investor, risk associated with investments and do’s and don’t of trading in market. He advised investors to invest wisely.
Mr. Sanjay Ghakar, Vice President, Multi Commodity Exchange of India in his address spoke about MCX platform ecosystem, the types of commodities traded and the regulatory framework for it. He highlighted that Average Daily Turnover for MCX was about R. 32000 Cr where Spot, future, forward transactions are traded daily in Bullion, Energy, agriculture and metal & alloys. He advised investors to stay away from a promise of getting fixed return on investing in MCX.
Professor Sanjeev Sharma, Professor,UIAMS proposed vote of thanks. He said that since UIAMS is starting MBA (Capital Market ) programme from this year. This webinar is step towards that direction and will strengthen industry-academia interaction.
