Ludhiana, October 27, 2012: Stroke or brain attack is the second leading cause of death. More than two-thirds of the deaths due to stroke occur in developing countries like India. The World Stroke Day is celebrated throughout the world on 29th October. Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, Chair of the World Stroke Campaign of World Stroke Organisation said that this year’s theme is “1 in 6”
people will experience stroke in their life time.
CMC Stroke Unit had organised many awareness programmes during this week. On 25th October a team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, students and interns of College of Physiotherapy went to Hambran village to spread stroke awareness. They conducted free check up to find out their risk of developing stroke for about 150 people in the village. Many people were detected to have high blood pressure and high blood sugar for the first time. Then the team went to a local school and delivered talks and put up skits regarding stroke symptoms, risk factors and treatment to the students and teachers.
Today in the hospital auditorium at CMC the stroke unit organised a stroke support group meeting. About 50 stroke patients and relatives attended the program. Bansilal Surana an Industrialist and Manoj from Ludhiana were the guest of honors. Both of them had a stroke and have recovered completely. They shared their life experience after stroke.
Dr Santosh Mathangi, Consultant, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation spoke about the importance of long term management of stroke patients stressing on the Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy. Rajni Arora, Associate Professor of College of
Physiotherapy said that intense physiotherapy is needed for optimal recovery of stroke patients. Navneet, Occupational therapist talked the various ways the caregivers could cope while taking care of the relatives with stroke. The students and interns of College of Physiotherapy played a skit about the recognition of stroke symptoms and the importance of physiotherapy. Ruma Singh, Head of Dietary department talked about the healthy diet and its role in prevention of stroke. Dheeraj KV, Vice-Principal, College of Physiotherapy gave the vote of thanks. Lizzy and Deepika Sharma conducted the program.
Tomorrow the stroke team is going to West End Mall to create stroke awareness. On 29th the World Stroke Day there will be stroke walk near Hotel Park Plaza to the canal road. Medical students, Physiotherapy students and staff will be taking part in the stroke walk. After the
stroke walk there will be a road show in various places in the city.
