Barkha Bisht on reprising the role of Kali Maa in Sony SAB’s Tenali Rama

Mumbai: Sony SAB’s Tenali Rama continues to captivate audiences with its intriguing tales of the legendary court poet and brilliant strategist, portrayed by the talented Krishna Bharadwaj. In this new chapter, Barkha Bisht portrays Kali Maa, a powerful divine figure who foresees a great danger approaching Vijayanagar, prompting Tenali to return and protect the kingdom. Her prophecy sets the stage for Tenali Rama’s return as he races against time to uncover the threat and protect the kingdom. With her commanding presence, Kali Maa guides and challenges Tenali, adding a mystical depth to the story.

In a candid conversation, Barkha Bisht talks about her experience playing Kali Maa, the success of Tenali Rama, and more.

What was your first reaction when you were offered the role of Kali Maa in the new chapter of Tenali Rama?
I was thrilled when I was offered the role of Kali Maa again, especially since this is the second season of Tenali Rama, and I had already portrayed this character in the first season. Returning to the show felt wonderful, and being part of it once again was truly special. Playing a revered deity is always a great responsibility, especially in a country like ours, where gods and goddesses hold deep significance. However, more than anything, I felt honored and excited to bring Kali Maa to life once again.

What is the most rewarding part of playing Kali Maa?
The most rewarding part of portraying Kali Maa is the knowledge I gain along the way. There are countless books on gods and goddesses, but we don’t always get the opportunity to read them all. Through this role, I’ve learned so much about Kali Maa—her history, her beliefs, and her teachings. The show beautifully highlights her wisdom and the lessons she imparts to Tenali, and I hope the audience takes away something meaningful as well.

What has your preparation process been like for portraying a deity with such immense power and reverence?
I don’t think there’s a definitive way to prepare for a role like this. Kali Maa is such a powerful and divine figure that no amount of preparation can fully capture her essence. The best I can do is approach the role with sincerity and hope that the audience connects with my portrayal.

Are there any new elements in the character this time?
Kali Maa, as a deity, is timeless, so her characterization remains largely unchanged. However, this time, her presence in the story is far more prominent than in season one. She plays a greater role in guiding Tenali Rama, and I hope her wisdom and teachings resonate even more with the audience.

Mythological characters often leave a lasting impact on actors. Has this role influenced you personally?
Absolutely. As actors, we take on many roles, but some characters leave a lasting impact. Kali Maa’s teachings—about strength, resilience, and empowerment—have stayed with me. She embodies the immense power within every woman, and portraying her has reinforced my belief that we all carry a Kali Maa within us. At times, we may forget our own strength, but this role has been a powerful reminder to always recognize and embrace it.

How has your experience been working on Tenali Rama? Any memorable moments with your co-stars?
Working on Tenali Rama has been a wonderful experience. I’ve worked with the production house before, and they are truly one of the finest in the industry. When it comes to my co-stars, I must mention Krishna Bharadwaj, who plays Tenali. His command over Hindi is truly remarkable! The dialogues in Tenali Rama are intricate and lengthy, yet he delivers them with such ease and precision. There are moments when I simply watch him in awe, wondering how he does it. At a time when many are influenced by Western culture, it’s incredibly refreshing to see someone so deeply rooted in our language and traditions.

What can viewers expect from your portrayal of Kali Maa, and do you have any message for fans of Tenali Rama?
Viewers can expect Kali Maa to guide Tenali whenever he encounters challenges. Though he is known for his intelligence, even he sometimes requires divine intervention. Through my portrayal, I hope the audience finds comfort in the idea that, no matter what life brings, there is always a higher power to turn to. Whether one believes in God or a guiding force, it is hope that keeps us moving forward, and I hope this character inspires that belief.
