Ludhiana, October 25, 2012: The work has finally started on the bio-remediation project to clean the Budha Nullah of the toxic mater so that uncontaminated water flows into the river Satluj.

This has been a long pending and long awaited project for the people of this city.

Disclosing this here today, Ludhiana MP Manish Tewari, who has been instrumental in getting this project approved from the Union Ministry of Environment, disclosed that the work has started from the Jainpur Area.

Under the first phase six green bridges will be built up which downstream on the Budha Nullah. The green bridges are designed to be compact miniaturised in-situ start treatment systems for industrial and domestic effluents. It is an eco-friendly technology and comes at a low cost besides being less time consuming.

The green bridge technology is based on filtration, biodegradation and biosorption mechanisms by microbes and plants. It is a combination of Ecofert – which is an active microbial consortia, biomats, sand, gravels and plants. The stones/boulders act as a filtering material and prevent the solids from passing through the bridges. The green plants/flora grown at the banks of the water body also contributes towards the treatment of the wastewater.

It may be recalled that the then Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh had visited Ludhiana last year and inaugurated the project himself by dropping the microbial consortia in the nullah. The experimental reports have shown encouraging results, Tewari said, while hoping the project will held in getting the nullah cleaned up.

Prominent among others present on the occasion included DCC Urban President Pawan Dewan, Manjit Singh Hambran, Baljinder Singh Malakpur, Harmohan Singh, Gurinder Singh Jainpur, Sukhdev Singh and others.
