PU’s Sanskrit department celebrates Vasanta Panchami
Chandigarh, February 14, 2024: Panjab University’s Sanskrit department organised a special programme today on the occasion of Vasanta Panchami. Saraswati Puja, recitation of Shlokas, deliberation on Vedic knowledge, etc. were some of the events held. Teachers, research scholars and students of the department participated in the event. Prof. V. K. Alankar said, “Bharat is pervaded by Bharati or Saraswati, the goddess of speech and wisdom.” Prof. Alankar also told the audience that in Sanskrit, svatantrata means the expansion of the self, which comes through discipline. “We hope that Bharat expands in wisdom, skill and all good qualities”, Prof. Alankar added. Teachers of the department presented short speeches. Dr. Vikram told about how the great poets like Banabhatta and Kalidasa have depicted Vasanta Ritu or the spring season in their compositions. Dr. Shivaji Pandey told about the significance of Vasanta Panchami in the Jyotisha Shastra. Dr. Vijay Bharadwaj demonstrated the Jata-patha method of recitation of Vedic mantras. Students of MA Sanskrit recited Vedic mantras, sang hymns in praise of Goddess Saraswati and presented poems in remembrance of martyrs. Office staff of the department gifted pens and notebooks to the students on this auspicious occasion.
On this occasion, the martyrs of 2019 Pulwama attack were remembered. Young martyr of the 18th century Veer Haqiqat Rai, who gave his life but did not accept forced conversion to Islam, was also remembered.
