Dharamsala, June 17, 2023: The opposition party BJP staged protests and demonstrations in the district headquarters of Himachal Pradesh, condemning the brutal murder of Manohar in Saloni, Chamba district. In Kangra district, BJP leaders and workers also protested in Dharamshala and submitted a memorandum to the Governor through the District Magistrate. The BJP demanded the immediate arrest of the accused in the murder and called for an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
During the protests in Dharamshala, BJP leaders criticised the functioning of the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhoo government and accused the administration of obstructing Opposition leaders, including Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, from visiting Saloni to meet the affected family.
Chandrabhushan Nag, the Kangra District President of BJP, stated that whenever the Congress government comes to power in the state, incidents of anarchy and hooliganism increase. He pointed out the Gudiya Kand incident during the previous Congress government and the recent heinous incident in Saloni, Chamba district, which has disturbed the peace in Devbhoomi. Nag emphasised the need for an NIA investigation, citing the suspicious background of the main accused in the Chamba episode, who possesses substantial property and faces allegations of encroachment on government land.
Rakesh Sharma, the State BJP's media in-charge, raised concerns over the fact that the accused in the case had not been arrested yet, questioning the intentions of the administration and the government. He alleged that the Chief Minister himself did not visit the victims. The BJP demanded the harshest punishment for the killers of the 21-year-old youth whose body was severed and dumped into a nullah in Salooni sub-division of Chamba district. The incident has led to communal tensions in the Salooni area of Chamba district. The body of the 25-year-old victim, a resident of Bhandal village, was found in a forest area in Salooni on June 9.
