Ludhiana, April 20, 2023: Bone cancer treatment started in Dayanand Medical College as Dr Anubhav joined back after training at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Research Center New Delhi and subsequent training at Tata Memorial Cancer Center Mumbai.
In what is being touted as a major relief for thousands of patients fighting cancer in Malwa region , Dayanand Medical College (DMC) has announced a facility of specialized treatment of Bone and Soft Tissues Onco Surgery . This new facility has become operational following Dr Anubhav Sharma ‘s return to institution after accomplishing the Fellowship in Orthopedics Oncology Surgery (Bone Cancer) at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Research Center New Delhi and subsequent training at Tata Memorial Cancer Center Mumbai.
Dr Sandeep Puri, Principal DMC & Hospital said that there was significant increase in the incidences of Bone Cancer among patients from Punjab and neighboring states and this integrated facilities to treat and care the patients here at DMC will prove a boon for the region comprising Northern India .
Dr Anubhav Sharma , who has joined as Assistant Professor in Department of Orthopedics , said in today’s complex world where medical issues especially concerning spread of cancer have become too complex . “Exact cause why this happens is often not known, but some cases are linked to hereditary reasons. There are currently no recognized effective methods for preventing bone cancer. Such a facility at DMC is sure to benefit thousands and thousands of needy”, he added.
Cautioning against smoking and tobacco chewing, Dr Anubhav advised that one must eat nutritious balanced and healthy diet, do regular physical exercise and must undergo periodic health checkups to prevent or ensure early detection of the disease. He added , it most often occurs in young people between the ages of 10 and 30, but about 1 in 10 osteosarcomas develop in people older than 60. It's rare in middle-aged people, and is more common in males than females. These tumors develop most often in bones of the arms, legs, or pelvis. According to him, the general signs and symptoms of bone cancer include, Bone pain, Swelling and tenderness near the affected area, Weakened bone leading to fracture, Fatigue and Unintended weight loss .
Talking about the treatment offered, Dr Anubhav said that treatment plan depended on the type of disease like which bone it started in , its stage (extent) and other factors like general health and age of the patient. Surgery with option of radiotherapy and chemotherapy are planned accordingly.
