Building Confidence and Discipline amongst Underprivileged Youth through Sports

Deepalaya organizes an inter-VTC cricket tournament for students

New Delhi, February 6, 2019: Deepalaya, the largest operational NGO in Delhi-NCR, recently organized a friendly inter-VTC cricket tournament for the students of its vocational training centres in the national capital. Two cricket teams consisting of students from Deepalaya’s Vocational Training Centres in Sanjay Colony (Okhla Phase 2), Gole Kuan (Okhla Phase 1), Kakrola (Dwarka), and Patel Garden (Dwarka Mor) participated in the competition that was held at Kaya Maya Ground in Tughlakabad.

Approximately 30 students (in the age group of 16-25) belonging to the slum colonies of Dwarka and Okhla were present on the occasion (either as a part of the playing eleven or cheering the teams, handling scorecards, etc.). The match as well as tournament was won by Deepalaya’s West Delhi team, who defeated the opponent i.e. Deepalaya’s South Delhi team by 7 wickets (and 3 balls remaining).

The match was played in the presence of Mr. Jameskutty VE, Project Coordinator of Deepalaya VTCs in South Delhi; and Computer instructors of Deepalaya including Mr. Pradeep Chauhan; Ms. Komal Rathore, and Ms. Kulwant Kaur.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jameskutty VE said, “Deepalaya conducts such events at regular intervals with an objective to inculcate good habits, confidence and discipline amongst the youth of the community. The idea is to develop leadership qualities, nurture growth opportunities, and build a positive mindset among the youngsters, who may otherwise go astray due to various socio-financial reasons.”

The four vocational training centers run by Deepalaya in Delhi provide computer training to the underprivileged youth through various computer courses with the support of NIIT Foundation. The centers also aim to develop entrepreneurship, communication and personality traits amongst the students, as well mentor them to be equipped for jobs in corporates and other service sectors.
