Ludhiana, December 11, 2012: A major tragedy was averted due to early detection of flames emanating out of power of Shan-E-Punjab (No. 12498) en-route Amritsar to New Delhi in the outskirts of Ludhiana today.  

As per the information, the engine of the train caught fire due to short circuit. It had happened due to some mechanical fault in the engine of the train. Sources said some new system had been introduced in engine of the train on trial basis today, which met with some fault.

The fire was controlled within about 20 minutes.

As per the information, the fire occurred inside engine of the train at around 6.45 pm following which the drivers stopped the train at Ladhowal railway station. Fire brigade service was put into service to extinguish the fire.

The engine was replaced at the Ludhiana railway station.

The train got delayed for about sixty minutes due to this occurrence.

Sources in the railways told that the incident occurred because of short-circuit in the electrical wires. They said it was a mechanical error.

None has been injured in the incident.
