Ludhiana, October 27, 2012: A mega Obesity Check-up Camp and BMI Screening Camp was organised today at DMCH.
According to Bariatric Surgeons-Dr Ashish Ahuja and Dr PS Nain, obesity has emerged as a silent lifestyle disease over the years. Overall, 2.5 million deaths are attributed to overweight/obesity worldwide. They pointed out that more than 60% of young obese patients suffer from diabetes mellitus type 2 alongwith blood pressure and heart disease, which is increasing day by day in younger population.
In the camp, around 100 patients were screened and a medical check up was done by Dr Amit Berry, Assistant Professor of Medicine at DMCH. Senior Dietician Shweta Batta gave an elaborative and simple talk to audience on managing weight loss by very simple techniques.
Dr. Ahuja informed that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics, one in six persons in the world is considered obese. One in ten persons in the world is diabetic and one in three persons in the world suffering from high blood pressure. Based on 2007 National health Family Survey Data, as many as 30.3% of males & 37.5% females are obese in Punjab.
During the camp, patients who had ungergone Bariatric surgery at DMCH were present and came on the stage to share their experience with other people.
Dr. Nain said diabetes mellitus type 2 has 90% resolution after Bariatric surgery and high blood pressure is cured within a span of 1-2 months. Sleeping disorders like obstructive sleep apnoea is totally cured after a patient undergoes Bariatric surgery Procedure and starts losing weight even problems like infertility, depression, migraine are cured to a great extent in obese patients who get a new confidence to start their life said Dr. Ahuja.
On conclusion of the event people asked common Myths about the weight loss procedure. The doctors informed that in a tertiary care hospital with good infrastructure the complication rate is very low & there are absolutely no major side effects of the procedure.
