Celebration of 71st Constitutional Day at Panjab University
Listeners were enlightened with his valuable insights into fundamental rights and duties
Chandigarh: Panjab University celebrated the 71st Constitutional Day today, organized an online lecture on ‘Let the Fundamental Duties be Enforced’ by the Nodal officer, Prof. Jyoti Rattan in collaboration with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Centre, UGC, Ministry of Education and Government of India in the presence of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jasbir Singh , Former Acting Judge Punjab and Haryana High Court, Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor Panjab University, Dr. Monika Negi, Coordinator Laws, UILS, Hoshiarpur and Prof. Devinder Singh, coordinator ,B.R. Ambedkar Centre Panjab University.
Mr. Justice Jasbir Singh, Former Acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, started his lecture with Swami Vivekanand’s quote “arise, awake and stop not till the aim is achieved.” He then elaborated the 3 duties that have continued to be practiced in India since ancient times- duty towards teachers, duty towards parents and most importantly, duty towards nation. It is these duties towards the nation that have been incorporated as Fundamental Duties. These duties emanate from the Preamble of the Constitution, asking the citizens to pay their debt to the nation. These duties include our duty to be Indians and not be divided on linguistic, religious, ethnic or territorial lines, to be proud of our rich cultural heritage and sacrifices of our freedom fighters, to protect the environment by being responsible and proactive citizens in conversing natural resources, educating our children to make a strong, knowledgeable youth to take our nation to great heights.
Professor Raj Kumar Vice Chancellor Panjab University welcomed the Chief Guest as a humble and great man, who is always ready to share his knowledge on legal matters with the students and faculty of the University. He also congratulated the various departments of the University, who have worked day in and day out in organizing several webinars and writing research papers despite the burden of pandemic being very high on them, thus maintaining the prestige of Panjab University.
Earlier, Prof. Jyoti Rattan, Nodal Officer, welcomed the dignitaries of the event and all other attendees, by quoting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, in whose honor the Constitutional Day, formerly celebrated as the Law Day, is celebrated. She elaborated how Fundamental Duties are gaining an important place, and how Swaran Singh Committee recommended Fundamental Duties ,ensured citizens of India also practiced their duties while claiming their Fundamental Rights.
Dr. Monika Negi, coordinator introduced the chief guest of the event as a person of great expertise and experience in judicial matters, a renowned member of bar and bench, one who impartially performed his duties as the Judge of High Court and Acting Chief and the PU Vice Chancellor.
Prof. Devinder Singh gave formal vote of thanks to Mr. Justice Jasbir Singh for being the perfect authority on the topic of constitution, and enlightening the listeners with his valuable insights into Fundamental Rights and Duties, and for showing us the path to lead India to its true glory.
