Central University of Punjab organised invited lecture on “Multiple Narratives on Dulla Bhatti: Looking at History, Literature and Folklore”
The Department of History, Central University of Punjab, under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, organised an invited lecture on the topic "Multiple Narratives on Dulla Bhatti: Looking at History, Literature, and Folklore."
Bathinda, May 11, 2023: The Department of History, Central University of Punjab, under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, organised an invited lecture on the topic "Multiple Narratives on Dulla Bhatti: Looking at History, Literature, and Folklore." The invited speaker for this programme was Professor (Retd.) Surinder Singh, Department of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Prof. Singh focused his talk on three major dimensions to understand the presence and context of Dulla Bhatti in oral traditions. In the first section, he used folklore traditions evolved by balladeers Rajjab Ali and Ahmed Salim. He then made use of three different plays that contextualise Dulla Bhatti as an icon and a symbol of a new society. In the third section of his lecture, he used two movies that romanticised Dulla Bhatti with some cinematic liberties. He concluded his talk with folk Punjabi musical traditions about Dulla Bhatti.
After the lecture session, the invited speaker was felicitated by Prof. Kuldip Singh, Dr. Harit Kumar Meena, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, and Dr. Ashwani Kumar. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Ashwani Kumar. Towards the end, Dr. Rajni Sahota delivered a formal vote of thanks. Students and research scholars from different departments attended this programme.
