Central University of Punjab organized an Invited Lecture on "Education for Nation Building and Global Citizenship" by Prof. D.P. Singh
The Central University of Punjab, under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, organized an enlightening lecture titled "Education for Nation Building and Global Citizenship." The invited speaker of this programme was Prof. D.P. Singh, Former Chairperson, University Grants Commission. Prof. D.K. Singh, Director AIIMS, Bathinda also graced the occasion as special guest.
Bathinda, September 9, 2023: The Central University of Punjab, under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, organized an enlightening lecture titled "Education for Nation Building and Global Citizenship." The invited speaker of this programme was Prof. D.P. Singh, Former Chairperson, University Grants Commission. Prof. D.K. Singh, Director AIIMS, Bathinda also graced the occasion as special guest.
During his insightful lecture, Prof. D.P. Singh delved into the multifaceted aspects of education that contribute to nation-building and the development of global citizens. He underscored the importance of nurturing a well-rounded education system that not only imparts knowledge but also instils values, ethics, and a sense of responsibility towards society and the world. Prof. Singh stressed that education should foster critical thinking, creativity, and a global perspective to prepare individuals to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.
Prof. Singh highlighted India's rich heritage, democratic values, and peaceful coexistence despite socio-cultural diversities. He referenced the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the teachigns of Swami Vivekananda to highlight the pivotal role of education in nation-building. He also cited the words of wisdom of Sikh Sant Attar Singh Ji and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya to emphasize the transformative power of universities in shaping young minds into global citizens. Prof. Singh stated that the Guru Parampara of Sikh religion teaches us the values of equality, kindness, and compassion. He stressed on the importance of blending ancient wisdom with modern science to impart true holistic education to our youth.
Furthermore, Prof. Singh discussed India's nation-building efforts during its G20 Presidency, emphasizing the role of global cooperation in promoting economic growth, addressing global challenges, and supporting sustainable development.
He also highlighted the significance of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020) in advocating for Global Citizenship Education (GCED), aiming to make learners aware of and understand global issues while promoting peace, tolerance, inclusivity, and sustainability. This aligns with the United Nations' sustainable development goals for education in the 2030 agenda.
Prof. Singh elaborated on the Educational Framework for Global Citizenship in Higher Education formulated by the UGC, aligned with NEP-2020 and the SDGs. This framework enables higher education institutions to integrate the concept of Global Citizenship among learners through teaching, pedagogy, and research, with a focus on developing problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and other essential skills. He concluded his talk by urging HEI to earnestly implement GCED.
In his presidential address, Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, the Vice-Chancellor, expressed his profound gratitude towards Prof. D.P. Singh for delivering this enlightening lecture. He reiterated the Central University of Punjab's unwavering commitment to providing quality education that contributes to shaping responsible global citizens.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome by Prof. Monisha Dhiman, Director IQAC who emphasized that the university is a knowledge of temple where we are determined to keep on learning from experts from various fields. Prof Singh being one of pioneer in National Education Policy, promotion of research and innovation, quality assessment and accreditation, and reforms in higher education will further enhance our knowledge. While introducing the invited speaker, Prof R Wusirika, Dean Incharge Academics mentioned that Prof. D.P. Singh is a renowned academician in the field of education and is widely recognized for his contributions to reforms the higher education and it's globalization. Towards the end of this programme, Prof. B.P. Garg, Controller of Examinations and Registrar Incharge, gave formal vote of thanks.
