Bathinda, March 4, 203: To commemorate the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB) under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari organized a series of events, including a special lecture; open mic, and a street play on Friday. The invited speaker on this occasion was Dr. Monica Sabharwal. Faculty and students from different departments attended this programme.
At the outset, research scholar, Shilpa welcomed the participants and presented the theme of the program. Prof. Alpna Saini introduced the invited speaker.
While interacting with the participants, Dr. Monica Sabharwal delivered a talk on gender and mobility. She highlighted that history has given many references to the fact that women had to face discrimination in every aspect of their lives because of the system of patriarchal society in which women were confined only to the four walls of the home and the working class was not inclusive of women. She said that though women in the 21st century have the opportunity to showcase their talent and prove their ability in every aspect of life, they are still victimized by male gaze in unsafe public spaces. She also held the media accountable for propagating women as instruments of sexuality. Dr. Sabharwal asserted that society needs to acknowledge the contribution of women at both a personal and professional level and provide them with safe social spaces. Dr. Sabharwal inspired the female participants to raise their voices against injustice and discrimination.
After the talk, participants shared their concerns related to gender-specific issues during the open mic session. On this occasion, students from the Dept. of English performed a self-written and produced street play on gender equality, which was appreciated by all.
