Chandigarh to Host Junior National Rugby Championships 2019

Chandigarh, June 13, 2019: The Indian RugbyFootball Union (IRFU) akaRugby India, the governingbody for the sport of Rugbyin India in association withSociete Generale, one ofthe largest Europeanfinancial services groupand Rugby Football Association- Chandigarh, are hosting the “Societe Generale Junior NationalRugby Sevens Championship 2019” at the Punjab University, Chandigarh from 14th to 16th June, 2019.

A total of 24 States and affiliated Units to IRFU will be participating and will fight the battle to claim victory in this championship. The participating state teams include Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Kerala, Assam, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur, and hosts Chandigarh.

Naseer Hussain ( Ex Captain India Rugby team) General Manager Rugby India said - “ This is an extremely exciting time for Rugby India given the increasing popularity that the sport is witnessing across the nation. The overwhelming participation that we have received for this tournament is true testament to that. With 24 state teams in the boy’s category and 18 State teams in the girl’s category, this grand event promises to showcase some brilliant rugby over the weekend. The sport is growing rapidly across Chandigarh and it is encouraging to see the development work being carried out. I would like to wish all the participating teams the very best for the championship”

Ranjan Sethi, President, Rugby Football Association-Chandigarh said, “We are honored to host the Junior National Rugby Sevens Championship 2019 for Boys & Girls at the Punjab University, Chandigarh. The city falls in favorable proximity of all other participating states and has the essential infrastructure and amenities required to nurture all sports. There is no dearth of talent in these areas, and tomorrow’s national championship will be the key to discover the potential of the next breed of national players from Chandigarh. We are hoping passionate rugby supporters from across the country will join in to witness the thrilling rugby action in Chandigarh.”

The tournaments will serve as the platform for selection for the Indian National U-18 and U-20 teams which are set to participate in the Asian Rugby championships later this year.
