Ludhiana, March 4, 2016: For empowering the children with special needs, the District Administration has allotted the one-year contract of canteen at Suvidha Kendra in Mini Secretariat, here, to them. This contract has been provided to them so that the children with special needs get empowered and also learn cooking for becoming self dependent. This canteen with the new name “Sashakt” was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Mr Ravi Bhagat, here today and even tasted the eatables prepared by these children.
It is pertinent to mention that the contract of this canteen was provided through open auction every year, but this time, as very few people showed interest, former Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Mr Supreet Singh Gulati had decided to provide it free of cost to children with special needs. As a result of it, three local NGO’s, namely Aashirwad, Nirdosh and Ekjot, agreed to run it and today, the children took charge of it. These children would operate this canteen from 10 am to 2 pm daily.
Deputy Commissioner Mr Ravi Bhagat informed that initially this canteen has been provided to these children for a period of one year. The land for the same has been provided by the District Administration, while the required equipment such as racks and refrigerator have been provided by Bonn Bread and Coca Cola, respectively. For helping these children, Bonn Bread has also decided to provide packed food for sale totally free of cost for first month.
Mr Ravi Bhagat informed that this canteen would be run as a vocational training centre by these NGOs. It would be currently run under the leadership of a physically challenged girl named Geeta (cooking expert) and three others, all aged around 18 years. This canteen would not only provide employment opportunity for these children, it would also be used for imparting training of cooking.
The Deputy Commissioner thanked both Bonn Bread and Coca Cola companies for supporting this noble cause and urged other industrial houses to come forward. He urged the other companies to provide packaged food free of cost to these children so that these children can get self dependent.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included ADC (D) Miss Apneet Riyat, ADC (G) Mr Ajay Sood, Assistant Commissioner (General and Grievances) Miss Kanu Thind, District Revenue Officer Mr Mukesh Kumar, besides several others.
