A Seminar on Hazardous Waste Management being organised by CICU & PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry at Ludhiana on Wednesday.

Ludhiana, May 20, 2015: PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry with the support of CICU and in association with Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change organized a Workshop on Hazardous Waste Management on 20th May, 2015 at CICU Complex, Focal Point, Ludhiana.
Sh. Avtar Singh, President CICU & Upkar Singh Ahuja, General Secretary inform the Chairman PPCB regarding the measures taken by industry to control pollution. They told the Chairman that enhancement of CETP capacity from 300kl to 500kl very shortly with modern modern techniques.
Sh. Gurmeet Singh Kular, Zonal Convener, PHD Chamber in his theme presentation said that the exponential growth in the chemical industries has laid to the release of huge quantity of wastes, potentially hazardous to the environment and the living organism including humans. In discriminate disposal of such wastes on land and water bodies have lead to the contamination of surface and ground water supply due to chemicals leaching out of the wastes, dump sites posing potential risk to human health. This has trigged the mechanism to establish a system for safe disposal of such wastes. 
Sh. Manpreet Singh, IAS, Chairman Punjab Pollution Control Board in his Key Note address said that Ludhiana is biggest hub of production in Punjab and now it is the need of hour to understand, analyze the situation of hazardous waste in Ludhiana. He also mentioned that Punjab Govt. is sincerely and dedicatedly working on the issues related to CETP plants and they are working on updation of CETP to increase their capacity.
Dr. Lakshmi Raghupathy, Former Director, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change in her address on incineration and hazardous waste utilization in cement plant that most of the countries have guidelines to comply with the requirements for co-processing of waste in cement plant but still in India there is a slow progress in incineration. She emphasized that there should be more effective enforcement of incineration to conserve our natural resources and monitoring mechanism needs to be evolved. She further said that best option is minimizing waste generation and if generation is inevitable reuse, recycle and recover should be the mantra.
Er. Harbir Singh, Sr. Environmental Engineer, PPCB in his address on guidelines for waste management and disposal said that industries generating waste oil should deposit to recyclers but not for the lubrication. he also mentioned that transportation of hazardous waste is the important link in hazardous waste management system and it requires precise control to ensure safe disposal of such waste.
The training program was well attended by various dignitaries from Punjab Pollution Control Board, Local Industry Associations, recyclers and the regulatory bodies.
The meeting was attended by prominent industrialists i.e. S/Sh. Joga Singh, K.K. Sth, T.R. Misra, G.S. Kahlon, Sukhdial Singh, Manjit Singh Matharoo, Rajinder Singh Sarhali, Daljit Singh Dico, O.P. Bassi, Rajnish Bansal, Jatinder Mittal and others.
