CII, BEML, and Indian Railways Host Successful Vendor Development Program and Exhibition in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, May 30, 2024: The Confederation of Indian Industry Northern Region (CII NR), in association with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Indian Railways, successfully organized CII Rail Connect Expo - a Vendor Development Program and Exhibition at the CII NR Headquarters today. The event saw enthusiastic participation from Indian manufacturers aiming to become component suppliers for the manufacturing of various locomotives and the operations and maintenance of assets within the Indian Railways network.

 
With a total of 40 stalls being represented by various component manufacturers for railways and over 200 registered delegates, the exhibition showcased a diverse range of products and services, including advanced materials, automated systems, solar power solutions, and state-of-the-art inspection technologies. This vibrant exhibition provided a platform for vendors to demonstrate their innovations and capabilities, directly engaging with Indian Railways officials and other industry leaders.
 

S K Suri, General Manager (Retired), Indian Railways – Rail Coach Factory (RCF), delivered his address on ‘Emerging Opportunities in Indian Railways’. He highlighted the transformative initiatives driving growth within Indian Railways, stating, “Modernization, Expansion, and Outsourcing have unleashed tremendous opportunities for private entrepreneurs in the railway sectors.”
 

Modernization, Expansion, and Outsourcing for Growth of Indian Railways
Under Modernization, Suri listed the introduction of self-propelled trains, automation to reduce travel time, and the use of new materials such aluminum in the new Vande Bharat trains. He also elucidated initiatives like the Online Monitoring of Rolling Stock (OMRS), Machine Vision Inspection System (MVIS), Mission Raftar (aiming for speeds of 160 kmph with an investment of ₹1500 crores), and the Smart Yards Project (covering 40 yards with an investment of ₹1200 crores) which reflect the digitization and ‘Smart’ initiatives of the Indian Railways.
 
Under Expansion, he mentioned the efforts of the Indian Railways to expand its network and accommodate waitlisted passengers. He also mentioned the upgradation of Chandigarh railway station (₹450 crores) and the New Delhi railway station (and development of State Entry Road into a commercial space) by the Rail Land Development Authority.
 
Under Outsourcing, he said that the Railways is focusing on its core competencies and providing opportunities for entrepreneurs to in components and rolling stock such as locomotives, coaches, and wagons. There is huge opportunity of investment here, as India’s rolling stock sector is growing at 20-25% per annum in India as against the world’s 5-6% per annum, with electric locomotives in high demand.

 
Suri also emphasized Indian Railways' commitment to sustainability, with initiatives in solar power generation across station platforms, buildings, parking areas, workshops, and along the tracks. “Indian Railways is on track for 100% electrification and aims to become carbon neutral by 2030,” he said, highlighting investment opportunities of installing 3GW plants.
 

Avijit Chakroborty, Chief Design Engineer, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), spoke on ‘Opportunities in Locomotives in India,’ detailing the vendor registration process and e-tender procedures, emphasizing the importance of the “Make in India” initiative in public procurement. “Indigenization of products is important. We are currently importing 9 items which we want to source locally,” he stated.
 

Rajesh Bansal, Chief Material Manager, Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW), highlighted their production capabilities and the opportunities for vendors. “We produce electric locomotives and traction motors, as well as diesel electric tower cars for the inspection of Overhead Equipment (OHEs). There is a significant demand for high-quality components, and we are eager to collaborate with new suppliers who can meet our rigorous standards and contribute to the growth and modernization of Indian Railways.” Mr Bansal and his team provided a comprehensive overview of the tendering and procurement processes, ensuring clarity and transparency for potential vendors.
 

The event was successful in bridging the gap between industry players and Indian Railways, fostering relationships and paving the way for future collaborations that will benefit both sectors. The strong turnout and the engaging discussions highlight the potential for significant advancements in the Indian railway industry through collective efforts and innovation. The Vendor Development Program and Exhibition will continue till 31st May, 10am – 6pm at the CII NR Headquarters, Sector 31, Chandigarh.
