Hyderabad, January 8, 2017: The Yacht Club of Hyderabad and The Telangana Sailing Association felicitated City sailors, who won 6 medals at recently concluded Youth Nationals and India Internationals held at Chennai

Telangana sent the largest sailing team for India International Regatta at Chennai. The team surprised with clinching 6 medals. Telangana sent 26 sailors which constitutes 50% of the Indian fleet and about a third of the International Fleet that participated in the India International Regatta at Chennai which was held between 15th to 20th December. The team part assisted by the Telangana Youth Welfare and Tourism Ministry, largely comprising beginners headed out for their first International event at Chennai. The Telangana girls and boys performed creditably amongst competition from 12 countries including Sweden, Honkong and Thailand.

Mr. Venkateshwara Reddy, Chairman, Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) was the Chief Guest for the felicitation function.

Mr. Suheim Sheikh, Founder of Yacht Club of Hyderabad and Coach was also present on the occasion.
At a glittering ceremony held today at Yacht Club to felicitate the sailing medallists at the Youth Nationals and India International Regatta in Chennai, the President of the Telangana Sailing Association, Lt.Gen KS Rao announced that the TSA has been recognised by the Olympic Association to cheers from the many sailors and officials present.

“This recognition will take the sport of Sailing to the new high in the state of Telangana and we hope and open the doors for the state government to participate without restraint”, said Mr.Ranga Rao the President of the Olympic Association of Telangana

The Chief Guest Mr.Allipuram Venkateshwar Reddy was all praise for the effort of the association and complimented all the medal winners esp. Gauhtham Kantla who won a bronze at the Nationals and Rishab Nayar who won a Silver. Mr. Reddy said, the sailors had capacity to win even medals at Asian Games. Telangana should be first in sports, he said.

Telangana had the largest contingent at the India International Regatta and more than half the national fleet was from the state and the largest contingent ever in the nationals

6 medals is the largest haul Telangana has ever got at any Sailing National event

Telangana Sailors have won close to 20 medals this year alone and we have two National Champions and one Bronze Medallist and one Silver.

The state produced 9 in the top 20 amongst the boys in the Optimist Fleet and 10 in the top 25 open fleet.
