Chandigarh, April 9, 2015: In a bid to promote and develop Horticulture across the state, the Punjab government today set up Punjab State Horticulture Development Board under the chairmanship of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson of the Chief Minister's Office said that Badal gave approval to issue notification in this regard with the Agriculture Minister Punjab Jathedar Tota Singh as Vice-Chairman of this board. The official members of this board would comprise of; Chief Parliamentary Secretary Agriculture, Chairman Punjab State Farmers' Commission, Additional Chief Secretary-cum-Financial Commissioner Development, Vice-Chancellor PAU Ludhiana, MD Punjab Agri Export Corporation, MD Markfed, Commissioner Agriculture Punjab, Senior Deputy Director General ICAR, Chairman National Horticulture Commission or his nominee and Director Post Graduate Institute of Horticulture Research & Education. Director Horticulture, Punjab would be the Member Secretary of the Board.
The spokesperson said that the state government nominated two members each from Kinnow growers, Litchi growers, Peer growers, Guava growers and fruit & vegetable growers for a period of three years. The board could also co-opt any other member if so required to achieve its objectives.
The spokesperson further said that the board would review and monitor the promotion and development of horticulture crops including litchi, peer, guava, kinnow and other fruits and vegetables. It would suggest ways and means to increase production, productivity and quality of various fruits and vegetable crops. It would also suggest measures to be taken to ensure required supply of inputs at affordable prices to fruits and vegetable growers besides ensuring quality infrastructure development in horticulture sector. The board would also rationalize subsidies on inputs for horticulture crops besides identify and suggest measures for expeditious mechanization in horticulture sector both at pre and post harvest stage.
