CM lauds stellar performance of Punjab in census- 2011

Chandigarh, September 24, 2014: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today lauded the exemplary work done by nearly 56000 enumerators and supervisors involved in the Census- 2011 in the state thus making Punjab as No. 1 state in the country for accomplishing this gigantic task diligently and in a time bound manner.
Addressing the gathering after felicitating the officers of the state government with the President of India’s Census Medal and certificate here at Law Auditorium in Panjab University, the Chief Minister said that Census was the biggest administrative exercise which was the basis of country’s and state’s planning framework. He also appreciated the stupendous efforts of all the officers and officials who put in lot of hard work to complete this herculean task even before the stipulated time period. Badal also mentioned that Punjab was fortunate to have Punjabi University Patiala as one of the work station selected by the Government of India (GoI) along with the prestigious Jawahar Lal Nehru University for the processing and compilation of data.
The Chief Minister mentioned that during Census operation 2011 population of 2.80 crore were surveyed in 12581 villages and 217 towns of the state. Attributing the timely completion of this mammoth exercise to the unfailing and indomitable spirit of Punjabis Mr. Badal hailed the Punjabi’s inherent leadership quality to lead the country almost in every sphere. He said that this Census has revealed that Punjab had witnessed marked improvement in the Child Sex Ratio, which was now 846 females against 1000 males as compared to 798/ 1000 during 2001.
The Chief Minister said that the data of Census- 2011 has aptly established the credentials of Punjab as ‘Progressive State’ in the country. Apart from this, Badal said that Punjab had several firsts to its credit in terms of supply of potable drinking water, best health care services, excellent education infra structure, nearly 100% rural electrification and many others.
Prominent amongst those present on the occasion included Cabinet Ministers Gulzar Singh Ranike and Dr. Daljeet Singh Cheema, Secretary Local Government Ashok Gupta, Director Census Seema Jain and Special Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Ajoy Kumar Sharma.
