Dharamshala, December 19, 2024: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Thursday that his government is dedicated to introducing a new law aimed at combating corruption in the state. Speaking during a two-day discussion under Rule 67 in the Vidhan Sabha, the Chief Minister reaffirmed his administration's zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and pledged strict action against offenders.
"We are committed to working with fairness, transparency, and honesty," Sukhu stated, adding that consultations with legal experts are currently underway to frame an effective anti-corruption act.
In his address, the Chief Minister accused the previous BJP-led government of widespread corruption, including allegations of state lands being sold at throwaway prices. "This government will not compromise on corruption. Those responsible for malpractices will face strict legal action, including imprisonment," he warned.
However, the opposition expressed dissatisfaction with Sukhu’s reply, leading to a dramatic walkout during his speech. Opposition MLAs stood up, raised slogans accusing the Chief Minister of lying and misleading the House, and eventually exited the session while shouting slogans.
Sukhu criticized the opposition for its behavior, calling it disappointing and unproductive. "Instead of engaging in meaningful debate, the opposition leader and members walked out, showing their lack of commitment to addressing critical issues," he remarked.
The Chief Minister also addressed environmental concerns, including illegal mining and deforestation. He announced plans to introduce a comprehensive policy to regulate mining activities and revealed that the government is reviewing permissions granted for tree felling. "The previous government permitted the cutting of 19 species of trees; we have reduced this number to 13 and are considering further restrictions," he said.
Additionally, Sukhu accused BJP leaders of shielding individuals involved in corruption. Referring to a case involving the appointment of a chairman at KCCB, he alleged that a clean chit was given to the individual after they joined the BJP, enabling them to contest elections again. "The BJP's internal discord and lack of accountability are evident," he concluded.
