CMC Ludhiana Cardiac Department Adds Paediatric Cardiac Surgery To Its Range Of Cardiac Services

Ludhiana, April 3, 2017: The Cardiothoracic Surgical Department of CMC Ludhiana which has pioneered Cardiac and Thoracic surgery in Punjab from the 1960s now adds Paediatric Cardiac Surgery to its range of services with the recent arrival of a trained and qualified Paediatric Cardiac surgeon in Dr. Christopher Roy. He obtained his MCh.in Cardiothoracic surgery from CMC Vellore and has subsequently trained and worked in the specialty of Paediatric Cardiac surgery both in India and overseas.
He has spent a year each in Australia and New Zealand and has been exposed to some of the latest methods in Paediatric Cardiac surgery in New Zealand where routine surgeries for ASD, VSD, Tetralogy of Fallot and complex procedures like Arterial Switch Operations, Hypoplastic Left Heart syndrome, Univertricular Heart repairs have been carried out with minimal morbidity and mortality.
Dr. Christopher Roy has trained and worked in Chennai with Dr. K.M. Cherian, considered to be the Father of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery in India, assisting and operating independently on children with a wide range of congenital cardiac defects, from India and different parts of the world in two of the Premier Cardiac Units namely; Frontier Lifeline Hospital and the Madras Medical Mission.
More than 2,00,000 children are born with congenital cardiac defects every year in India and a majority die within the first year of life. Most of these children can be saved with timely surgery from as early as few weeks of life and beyond. Early detection, counseling and timely surgery for these children will now be offered at CMC Ludhiana.
