Compelling lecture on Birth Anniversary of Pierre Jeanneret
The Department of History at Panjab University in collaboration with M. N. Sharma Architectural Society, Chandigarh organised a compelling lecture on the Birth Anniversary of Pierre Jeanneret, on Friday, at Gandhi Bhawan, Panjab University.
Chandigarh, March 22, 2024: The Department of History at Panjab University in collaboration with M. N. Sharma Architectural Society, Chandigarh organised a compelling lecture on the Birth Anniversary of Pierre Jeanneret, on Friday, at Gandhi Bhawan, Panjab University.
The proceedings commenced with a gracious welcome note from Dr Jasbir Singh, the Chairperson of the Department of History followed by the ceremonial reception of esteemed guests by Prof. Yojna Rawat, Secretary of M. N. Sharma Architectural Society. Prof. Yojna Gandhi introduced the lecture's theme and offered a succinct overview of the speaker Dr. Deepika Gandhi, a distinguished and renowned architect for her significant contributions to the academia of Architecture of Chandigarh: The City Beautiful.
She gave an overview of the life of Pierre Jeanneret and his creation of something new with the plan of Chandigarh as most of the buildings of Chandigarh were designed by him. Building including schools, institutions, and the infrastructural belt throughout the city. The main focus of the designs remained the natural light with micro shaping, the plan of the city depended on the climate and culture of the people. The main centre of the lecture remained the architecture of Panjab University focusing on buildings like the Administrative Block, Gandhi Bhawan, A. C. Joshi Library, Fine Arts Museum, Hostels and even the furniture with minimalist designs. The lecture was followed by a Q&A session.
The presidential remarks were given by Professor Rajneesh Vats, who talked about the local history and how architecture works in making life pleasant. Following the lecture, guests were honoured with tokens of appreciation and gratitude and gifts.
Professor Anju Suri extended a formal vote of thanks.
The event garnered attendance from faculty members from diverse departments. Approximately 100 teachers and students from various departments and institutions attended the enlightening discourse.
