Congress exposed on double speak over SYL issue-Harsimrat Kaur Badal

Chandigarh, March 11, 2016: Union Food Processing Industries minister Mrs.Harsimrat Kaur Badal today asked Pradesh Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh to explicitly tell the people whether he would ask for Kumari Selja’s resignation or resign himself for failing to convince the Congress high command about the merit of Punjab’s case on the river waters sharing issue with Haryana.
In a statement here, Mrs Badal said it was surprising that even as Capt Amarinder was espousing Punjab’s cause and had even today supported the historic decision of the SAD-BJP government to denotify the order whereby land was acquired for the SYL canal, the Congress high command was espousing Haryana’s cause. “Kumari Selja represents the Congress high command and her statement in parliament today that the akalis always stalled the progress of SYL whenever they came to power is clear proof that the SAD-BJP government was coming in the way of the wishes of the Haryana as well as the Congress high command which would like to browbeat its Punjab unit into submission on this issue”.
Terming chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s decision to denotify the acquisition order whereby land was acquired for the canal as a landmark legislation, Mrs Badal said “this is the historic day when Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) under the most dynamic leadership of Sardar Parkash Singh Badal has settled the issue once for all. We have put a big full-stop on efforts of a gullible Congress led by Capt Amarinder Singh to cheat farmers and make them believe they were leading the battle against releasing waters through the SYL canal to Haryana.”
Mrs Badal said the truth of the matter was that it was the same Amarinder Singh who had hailed the construction of the SYL canal and it was the Congress party which had come up with the idea of construction of the canal by bypassing the principle of riparian rights.
The Union minister said the Congress had not cheated Punjab of its river waters alone. “The Congress is also responsible for the loss of Chandigarh which rightfully belongs to Punjab. Similarly it is the Congress which has denied Punjabi speaking areas to Punjab’’, she added.
Dwelling on the injustice done by Congress led Centre and State governments to Punjab, Mrs Badal said the saga of injustice started in 1955 when the then Union Water Resources Minister Mr. Gulzari Lal Nanda presided over distribution of Punjab waters to neighbouring States without following the riparian principle. She said Rajasthan was given 8MAF of water, which was more than the combined allocation of three riparian States. She said this saga of discrimination ended with the inauguration of the SYL canal by former Prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1982 under which additional water was forcibly allocated to Haryana without any just cause. “Punjabis have been suffering repeatedly at the hands of successive Congress governments even as Punjab Congress leaders continue to pay lip service to the demands of the State. The time has come to walk the talk. Amarinder Singh should either make the Congress high command toe his line on the issue of river waters or resign as a failed leader”, she added.
