CT Varsity develops robotic spider with real life applications

Ludhiana, December 12, 2019: Under the 24*7 working Robotics and Automation Lab, CT University develops Robotic Spider that has real life applications. The in-house project by students and faculty has the whole body prepared under ‘3D printer’. For the project, team used 12 servo motors in the four legged spider. All motors are connected with Arduino Nano and can be controlled using Bluetooth. These motors can be rotated through 180 degree angle providing more degree of freedom to the spider. Adding, Dr Harmeet Singh, Assistant Professor, said, “Nature has often been a source of inspiration in film and literature, but now engineers have entered into the natural trend, designing robots inspired by wildlife. This development demonstrates how our surrounding environment can influence human innovation and strengthens the interaction between humans and machines.” The students behind this project are from BCA, first year named Satyam Gupta, Rajveer Makkar and Raman Panesar. Discussing about the applications in real world, the students explained that this spider can be used for exploring dangerous and/or rough areas for humans. For instance, searching for survivors after a nuclear disaster, exploring war zones, inspecting unstable buildings after natural disasters such as an earthquake, tsunami or a volcanic eruption. Also, it is equipped with sensors and weapons, such a robot could be used in a crisis or war to avoid risking human lives in battle and also can be used for defusing bombs such as land mines. Currently robots with tracks are used to do this but this robot spider would have the serious advantage in that it could be used in more impassable areas than the current robots. Meanwhile, appreciating the efforts, Dr Harsh Sadawarti, Vice Chancellor, CTU said, “Innovation with Education encourages both teachers and students to explore, research and use all certain perspectives to uncover something new and innovative. It involves a different approach for encountering some problems and then solving them. Innovation improves education because it compels students to use a higher level of thinking to solve problems and increase productivity.”
