10 Punjab Farmers honoured for saying no to paddy straw burning; Dr Baldev Singh Naurth honoured for his dedicated service to farming community of Punjab

Ludhiana, April 10, 2019: CT University organised an awareness programme on scientific agriculture for farmers wherein a huge number of farmers from various districts of Punjab participated.

The event had stalls showcasing new farm technologies, subsidiary occupations, and literature put up by different departments of CTU, by Agriculture Department Punjab and other allied concerns including pesticide and fertilizer firms. The farm experts shared tips for scientific farming. The focus remained on technologies aimed at rational use of natural resources and eco-friendly crop production techniques. Models prepared by students were displayed. Besides, queries of the farmers were addressed by the experts.

The special attraction was ‘smart scare crow’ emitting distress calls of birds, light for scaring birds and animals, and generating fire alarm detecting fire in the field. The other technology showcased was ‘water sensing robot’ in which viewers showed keen interest.

Dr Baldev Singh Naurth of Department of Agriculture, Punjab was the Chief Guest. He expressed the concern on the need to reduce agricultural cost liabilities, boost profitability as well as the conservation of natural resources. In recognition of his dedicated technology transfer service to the farming community Dr Naurth was honoured with ‘Dr Norman Borlaug Award’.

On this occasion, 10 Punjab farmers were honoured with appreciation awards for saying ‘No’ to paddy straw burning. Welcoming the dignitaries and farmers, CTU Vice Chancellor Dr Harsh Sadawarti said that an effective farmer-expert-industry linkage can boost agriculture and that scientific agriculture is the only way for profitable agriculture.

Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Registrar CTU, shared that the theme of the programme was “Scientific Agriculture” adding that CTU under its social impact strategy programme has planned to involve its students in village development work.

The winning entries of produce competition, flower show, farm machinery and best stalls were awarded prizes. Farmers were distributed literature and educated through motivational slogans and charts on scientific agriculture.

CTU Chancellor Charanjit Singh Channi said that farmers, especially those with small holdings can improve their plight through scientific farming and subsidiary occupations. He said that farmers must steer their agriculture like a business.

During the occasion, the present dignitaries were CT University Chancellor Charanjit S Channi, Managing Director Manbir Singh, Registrar Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Dr G.S. Bakhshi, Dean Academics, Block Agriculture Officers Dr Harminder Singh Chhina, Dr Gurdeep Singh, Dr Raminder Singh, Er Amanpreet Singh Ghai and Er Harmandeep Singh.
