Dharamshala, June 13, 2018: “The Dalai Lama is in the "best of the health and the news of his illness is fake,” said Sonam Dagpo, a spokes person of Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamshala said today. Reacting over a news report claiming that the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of followers of Tibetan Buddhism and a figurehead of the Tibetan resistance movement, is suffering from an advanced stage of prostate cancer and the 82-year-old Tibetan leader has been undergoing treatment in the United State, Dagpo said,” Everybody now that recently Dalai Lama was very active in giving teachings , meeting people, tourists and others in Dharamshala and also attending so many programmes around the city. His Holiness has left on a 10-day lecture tour of the Baltic states Tuesday confirms is best health.”
"His Holiness the Dalai Lama is in excellent health. He himself has repeatedly told the Tibetans that he is in excellent health despite his age and not to worry," concurred Sonam Dagpo, Secretary, International Relations, and spokesperson for the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamshala.
Refuting false media news that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is terminally ill, Personal physician the Dalai Lama, Dr Tsetan Dorjee Sadutshang also said in Dharamshala that the information is “absolutely false and rubbish”.
He said, “His Holiness has been having a very very busy schedule. In fact, even in this month, he has been giving religious discourses on June 6, 7 and 8 continuously for three days to the youth ,How could a person suffering from prostate cancer sit and give discourses for three to four hours continuously for three days,”.
He added that the Tibetan spiritual leader is currently in Lithuania for four-day teachings and talks, following which he will visit Riga, Latvia to give two-day teachings. After several days, he is set to leave again for Ladakh. His Holiness will have another visit to Europe in September. In October, he will continue teaching and lectures in Dharamsala, and attend an event at Manali in Himachal Pradesh.
“Can a terminally ill-person conduct such a busy schedule,” said an official of the Dalai Lama’s office.
“How can somebody who is terminally ill and is said to be having such serious medical condition, ever engage in such busy schedule; it defies common sense. I would term this as total fake news,” Dr Tsetan said.
“Considering his age, someone going from 82 to 83, I don’t think an average person of that age can manage a schedule that he is managing. I want to tell all the public and those view the news that His Holiness is keeping very well considering his age and there is nothing to worry about,”said Dr Tsetan Dorjee.
Chime Rigzin, a secretary to Dalai Lama , expressed surprise over the report, and said that it was disturbing that the writer had not called the Dalai Lama’s office to confirm.
Chime Rigzin, a secretary, had claimed that doctors in Rochester, Minnesota, had found nothing left of a small sign of cancer in his prostate gland. They had identified and treated that two years ago. This time, during the examination at the Mayo Clinic, they saw no trace of it. It is completely cured, he had claimed.
