A separate publication on Scheduled Caste Households being released at a two day Census Data Dissemination workshop at Chandigarh.

Chandigarh December 27, 2012: A two day Census Data Dissemination workshop is being organised as part of the efforts to sensitise data users about the availability and use of latest Census 2011 results on Housing, Household Amenities and Assets.

The workshop is being organised with support from UNFPA and UNWOMEN. On the first day representative officers from the Department of Economics and Statistical Organisation and other Government offices, NGOs, academicians from University and Colleges participated.

Second day shall focus on use of Data Dissemination Tool ‘Censusinfo India ver. 2.0 module’ on Housing and Household Amenities from Census 2011.

Presentations on various parameters based on Housing data were made by the officers of the Census Directorate. The houselisting data of Census 2011 has revealed that Punjab ranks quite high on various parameters. One- half (49.9%) of the normal households in the State are residing in good condition census houses. Drinking water is available within premises to 85.9% of the households. Every second household in Punjab (51.0%) has ‘Tap’ as the main source of drinking water showing big improvement over that of 2001 (33.6%). There is a significant reduction in gap in rural and urban areas in this regard. In the State, 96.6% of the households are having electricity as the main source of “lighting” as against 91.9% in 2001. Latrine is available within premises to 79.3% of the households in the State. Similarly, bathing facility within premises is available to 71.5% households.

In Punjab, LPG/PNG is the most predominant fuel used for cooking in every second household in the State (54.5%). 5.4% of the households are having computer/laptop with internet and 7.4% households are having computer/laptop without internet. The percentage of households having telephone/mobile has shot up from 18.9% in 2001 to 82.1% in 2011. In the State, 47.4% households have Scooter//Motorcycle/Moped and 13.1% possess Car/Jeep/Van. Only 4.4% of the households in the State do not possess any of the specified assets.

Seema Jain, Joint Secretary, MHA, Government of India and Director Census, Punjab appeals to the participants to make its best use of data released and make use of the censusinfo India module in analysing the data.
