Ludhiana, July 27, 2018: World Hepatitis Day takes place every year on 28 July, with the aim of bringing the world together under one single theme in order to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and the impact it has worldwide. The theme for World Hepatitis Day 2018 is “Eliminate Hepatitis”.
Viral hepatitis – a group of infectious diseases known as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E – affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, causing acute and chronic liver disease and killing close to 1.4 million people every year, mostly from hepatitis B and C.
Hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus are the leading cause of Liver Cancer in the world, yet more than 80% of those affected with viral hepatitis are unaware of their status. Viral hepatitis does not restrict itself to one specific region or people, but is found worldwide making it a global epidemic.
The question is, how? There are 325 million people that are living with viral hepatitis in the world, yet up to 290 million of these are unaware that they have it. In recognition of this, we are aiming to focus on ‘finding the missing millions’ by educating and encouraging more people to get tested with the hope of finding the missing millions and treating and reducing further spread of the virus.
Hepatitis B/C to a large extent is an asymptomatic disease. Hence in majority of cases patients are diagnosed at a very late stage leading to poor treatment outcome. Also due to lack of awareness on disease transmission there is a risk of these patients spreading the disease to others though various means.
India accounts for a significant share of global HBV and HCV infections due to the large population; Later being highly prevalent in Punjab.
In order to raise awareness and to sensitize people about Hepatitis, Deepak hospital is organising an event on 28th July, featuring a free screening cum education, consultation with Liver specialist along with special Liver testing (Fibroscan).
