Demand for global arbitration and mediation professionals on rise aver experts at Amity University
Students advised to be more vocal in case they wish to succeed in the field of mediation
A session under the "International Lecture Series- ‘Taking Amity to the World and bringing the World to Amity”, initiated in collaboration with Embassy of Ecuador in India, was organized by Amity University. Hon'ble Mr. Mohammad Abdul Halim, District & Sessions Judge, Bangladesh Judiciary, Dhaka and Adv. and Arbitrator Mr. Ratan K Singh, Director-IndiaChartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK, Chairman-India Society of Construction Law, UK and FCIArb (UK) were the guest speakers. The international speakers shared the various career opportunities in the fields of arbitration and mediation with the students of Amity Law School.
Prof. D.K. Bandopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law School, Noida moderated the discussion and shared that the learning process has been augmented with the collaborations and exchange of ideas on platforms like this facilitated by technology. He added that such knowledge exchange allows students to learn about the happenings across the globe.
Mr. Ratan K Singh shared his views on arbitration with the students and stated that globalisation has led to increase in demand for international lawyers with language skills, cultural experience and overseas skills. He stated that this has also increased the demand for arbitration professionals as they are global citizens. He averred that there is dearth of skilled international arbitration professionals in India and how such events would allow upcoming lawyers to understand and see the potential in the field. Mr. Singh stated that arbitration is a very lucrative field giving extensive exposure and offers good remuneration as well.
He shared the various career options in the field with the students including in-house arbitration lawyers of corporate houses, Tribunal Secretaries, Construction Law & Arbitration that is an upcoming field among others. He suggested students to start participating in moot courts and start practicing & preparing for arbitration as early as possible. To succeed in arbitration, he further asked them to start developing their writing skills and be visible on social media platforms & also write for law journals. He also advised them to take up speaking opportunities, work or intern with arbitrators to sharpen their skills. He suggested students to have an exposure of trial courts to gain valuable experience & also learn about mitigation that will further aid in their career in arbitration. He stressed on continuous learning & training to be successful & to be aware of various arbitration institutions.
Mr. Mohammad Abdul Halim from Bangladesh gave insights on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) with a special focus on Mediation. He stated the importance of mediation that is used to sort out matters outside the court discussing pros and cons of the concerned issue often leading to settlement. He added that in developing countries, mediation plays a key role in resolving issues as it is time & money saving and parties take the decision amongst themselves, often being a win-win situation for them. He averred that people want quick solutions to their issues by spending less money and prefer to go for mediation than taking the legal course. He added that in mediation one can work both in the domestic and international market with Singapore & Hong Kong being a mediation hub. He also suggested the path to become a mediator by pursuing higher studies in the field and take training. He also advised students to be more vocal in case they wish to succeed in the field of mediation and the various segments of mediation that they can make a career in.
