Ludhiana, May 31, 2024: Department of Community Medicine, DMC&H, Ludhiana commemorated World No Tobacco Day today by hosting an awareness session and a skit to educate everyone on the dangers of tobacco use.

Event was conducted  under the leadership of Dr GS Wander, Principal & Dr. Sandeep Kaushal, Dean Academics, DMC&H. Dr Anurag Chaudhary, Professor & Head of department conveyed message to people to control menace of Tobacco in community. Dr. Sarit Sharma, Dr Sangeeta Girdhar, Dr. Mahesh Satija, Dr Vikram Kumar Gupta, Dr Priya Bansal, Dr Surinder Pal Singh, Dr. Pranjl  Sharma & Nishant Sharma were actively involved in organizing the health awareness session across various sites along with interns & students of MBBS Batch 2021.

"Protecting children from tobacco industry interference" is the theme for World No Tobacco Day this year. It emphasizes the need to protect future generations and ensure that tobacco consumption continues to reduce.

For India chewing tobacco is a major concern rather than smoking and other electronic tobacco products. 28.6 per cent of adults (15 year and above) in India use tobacco in any form. There are about 27 crore tobacco users including 20 crore smokeless tobacco users and 10 crore smokers in the country.

For India, 'World No Tobacco Day' assumes much more significance following the fact that the country is the third largest tobacco producing nation and second largest consumer of tobacco worldwide. Tobacco use is estimated to cause more than 1.3 million deaths in India annually.

"Protecting children from tobacco industry interference" is the theme for World No Tobacco Day this year. It emphasizes the need to protect future generations and ensure that tobacco consumption continues to reduce.

According to a latest report of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM), globally tobacco is responsible for 70 lakh (7 million) deaths and kills around 12.8 persons annually in India (more than TB, AIDS, malaria combined) and 3,500 deaths daily.
