Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies observed Martyrs’ Day
The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh observed 30th January 2023 as Martyrs’ Day.
Chandigarh, January 31, 2023: The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh observed 30th January 2023 as Martyrs’ Day. Professor Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri, Former Vice-Chancellor HP University, Dharamshala was the Chief Guest on this occasion. He delivered a Special Lecture on the ‘Relevance of Gandhi in the Present Context’ on this occasion. Professor Devender Singh, Chairperson of Department of Laws of Panjab University was the Guest of Honour. At 11:00 a.m., two minutes’ silence was observed by the audience to pay respect to the martyrs. In the beginning, the dignitaries paid rich tributes and homage to father of the country. Dr. Seema Malhotra welcomed the Guests.
Professor Devender in his address said that Gandhi’s Life itself is a message to the world. How Gandhi’s emphasis on cooperative movement and Swaraj be made more relevant and practical. He was talking about the use of Alternative Dispute Resolutions which is part of Gandhian philosophy and now the UN is directing us to implement it which is already part of our culture.
Professor K. C. Agnihotri in his Special Lecture on the ‘Relevance of Gandhi in the Present Century’ explained and advised everybody to follow the ideologies of Gandhi in a true essence. He said Martyrs give new way to reach to our goals. How in modern times Gandhiji’s relevance about taking pride in education in local dialect is the foundation of any society. How the youth of the country is still not able to free themselves from old clutches of education system set by Britishers. He emphasised on innovation and encouraged the habit of questioning among the youth. How research can be encouraged in the local dialect in a diverse country like India.
The Chief Guest with the guests of the function released a book authored by Dr. Ashu Pasricha and Dr. Krishan Kumar on “Major Issues of Criminology in India A Pathological Study”
The faculty members, research scholars, students and members of the staff of the Gandhian and Peace Studies Department as well as faculty members, staff and students from other Departments of the University attended the Commemoration of Martyrs’ Day.
