Chandigarh, September 11, 2023: Panjab University Sanskrit department celebrated the Sanskrit Divas today on 11.9.2023. A lecture on Kavya Saundarya was also organised on the occasion, where the speaker was Prof. Ritu Bala, from the V.V.B.I.S & I.S. institute Hoshiarpur, regional centre Panjab University.
Academic incharge of the department Prof. V. K. Alankar gave the inaugural address. Dr. Karn Singh, spear headed the celebration of Sanskrit Divas on Shraavani Poornima, which is a day traditionally connected with all scholars.
Prof. Ritu Bala gave a lecture on the concept of Saundarya in Sanskrit literature and poetics. The word Sanskrit itself means beautified, complete, said Prof. Bala. She quoted an excerpt from Maharshi Patanjalis Mahabhashya to express the ancient idea that even a single word if known and used properly, bestows benefits in this world and the next, which expresses beauty in each word. Further the experts on Sanskrit poetics say that the highest form of poetry is born of natural ability to compose poems, which has been seen in the case of only a few poets like Kalidasa. The journey from a human to Kavi to Mahakavi happens when the thought transforms from gross to subtle as per the experts.
On this occasion, student of M.A. 1st year Sahil recited a few stanzas of Prof. V. K. Alankar’s Sanskrit poetic book on Maharshi Valmiki titled “Valmikiprashastikavyam”. For this literary work, Prof. Alankar has been awarded by the Haryana Government.
Prof. Alankar gave the vote of thanks and emphasised on the study of Sanskrit texts. In this event, teachers, guests, research scholars and students of the department participated.
