Discussion on “Are the new criminal laws equipped to deal with sexual offences against women?”

Awaaz under the auspices of Prof Anil Kumar Thakur Debating Society in collaboration with Center for Human Rights and Duties organised a discussion on “Are the new criminal laws equipped to deal with sexual offences against women?” in light of the RG Kar Hospital Horror in the Moot Court Hall of Department of Laws, Panjab University.

Chandigarh, August 27, 2024: Awaaz under the auspices of Prof Anil Kumar Thakur Debating Society in collaboration with Center for Human Rights and Duties organised a discussion on “Are the new criminal laws equipped to deal with sexual offences against women?” in light of the RG Kar Hospital Horror in the Moot Court Hall of Department of Laws, Panjab University.
 
The event was presided over by Prof. Dr Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Center for Human Rights and Duties, Prof. Dr Supinder Kaur, Coordinator, Prof. Anil Kumar Thakur Debating Society, Prof. Dr Shipra Gupta, and Prof. Dr Dinesh Kumar, Department of Laws. Students and faculty members of various departments of Panjab University were in attendance. Prof. Dr. Supinder Kaur made the initiating remarks highlighting the grave injustice towards women in the society and opened the floor for students to commence the discussion.
 
The students talked about problems with law enforcement agencies and the police in their lack of properly implementing the laws. Concerns regarding lack of education and conservativeness amongst the society were raised. The students advocated for introducing generational change and sensitising people, especially the youth. The discussion highlighted how Rape is not merely a societal but also a cultural issue. Owing to their diverse academic backgrounds, the students analysed the issue with all lenses of critique and reformation.
 
The event concluded with the learned views of Prof. Namita Gupta and Prof. Dr. Dinesh Kumar.
