DMC&H achieves new milestone with successful cadaveric organ donation and first-in-house multi-organ transplants
DMC&H has achieved a significant milestone in the field of organ donation and transplantation as first-in-house cadaveric multi organ transplant was performed. It was possible when family of a 54-year-old brain-dead patient consented to give life to five people showcasing the hospital's state-of-the-art facilities and expertise in cadaveric organ retrieval and transplantation.
Ludhiana, January 17, 2025: DMC&H has achieved a significant milestone in the field of organ donation and transplantation as first-in-house cadaveric multi organ transplant was performed. It was possible when family of a 54-year-old brain-dead patient consented to give life to five people showcasing the hospital's state-of-the-art facilities and expertise in cadaveric organ retrieval and transplantation.
The donor's family generously consented to donate a liver, both the kidneys, and both corneas, which were allocated by the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO). The liver and one kidney were transplanted at DMC&H, while the second kidney was allocated to another hospital of state.
Both the transplants were successfully performed by collaborative efforts of Critical Care Medicine team, led by Dr. P. L. Gautam, Professor & Head; Anaesthesia team led by Dr Suneet Kant Kathuria, Professor & Head; Liver Transplant team, under the guidance of Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon and kidney Transplant team, led by Dr. Vikas Kumar, Assistant professor, Urology & In-charge of the Kidney Transplant Unit and Dr Harmandeep Singh Chahal Professor, Department of Urology.
Bipin Gupta, Secretary DMC&H Managing Society extended his gratitude to the donor and his family for the selfless act and appreciated the tireless efforts of DMC&H team. Further he emphasized that the successful completion of our first in house multi-organ transplant is a remarkable milestone for DMC&H.
Dr. G.S. Wander, Principal and Dr Sandeep Sharma, Medical Supdt., DMC&H congratulated to the team for their achievement and highlighted that DMC&H has state of the art facilities for cadaveric organ donation. The in-house cadaver organ retrieval process involved planning and coordination among teams of doctors, administration, nurses and para-medicals. Every organ donor is a hero who leaves behind a legacy of life highlighted Dr Wander and Dr Sharma.
Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon and Dr. Vikas Kumar, In-charge, Kidney Transplant Unit, DMC&H commented that the transplant was a complex procedure, but our team's expertise and coordination ensured its success. We appreciate the trust placed in us by the donor's family and we are grateful to the donor's family for their generosity and we will continue to work towards promoting organ donation and providing exceptional patient care to the patients. Liver and one kidney were transplanted to two patients suffering from liver cirrhosis and kidney failure respectively. Organ failure patients get new life from such decisions of organ donation taken by the grieving family said Dr Sahota.
The donor’s body was escorted back to his residence with honor and a heartfelt tribute was paid by the Hospital Administration.
