DMC&H holds free eye check up camp for children

Ludhiana, March 212, 2025: In a significant step toward reducing childhood blindness, the first pediatric eye screening camp for children less than 18 years under ‘Project ROSHANI’ was successfully conducted in village Buthari, Ludhiana . Likely the first of its kind in the region, the camp received an overwhelming response, with 178 children from 14 surrounding villages undergoing comprehensive eye examinations by a team of doctors and optometrists from DMC&H, led by Dr. Priyanka Arora (Project Head) and Dr Surinder Pal Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine.
Among the children screened, 25 were diagnosed with serious eye conditions, including congenital cataracts, squint, ptosis, and corneal opacities—conditions that, if left untreated, can lead to permanent vision impairment. To prevent lifelong disability, children requiring surgical intervention will receive free surgeries at DMC&H Ludhiana. Additionally, those with refractive errors were provided free spectacles to improve their vision.
The camp’s success was made possible through the efforts of Nishkam Seva Society, Buthari, whose dedicated support ensured smooth organization and community participation.
Speaking about the initiative, Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H, Managing Society emphasized the need for early intervention, stating, "Addressing childhood blindness requires timely action. DMC&H is committed to supporting such outreach programs."
Dr. Gurpreet S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H, highlighted the significance of pediatric eye care, remarking, "Conditions like cataracts and squint can severely impact a child's future if untreated. This initiative will bring life-changing benefits to many."
Dr. Bishav Mohan, Chief Cardiologist, HDHI, stressed the importance of rural outreach, stating, "Bringing specialized pediatric eye care to remote areas is a crucial step in ensuring equal healthcare access for all children."
Dr. Anurag Chaudhary, Professor & Head Department of Community Medicine, DMC&H, noted the camp's broader impact, saying, "Beyond treatment, this initiative has helped educate parents and teachers on recognizing vision problems early."
Project ROSHANI: A Mission to Eliminate Childhood Blindness
Project ROSHANI is an initiative by DMC&H dedicated to preventing childhood blindness by ensuring early detection, treatment, and awareness of pediatric eye conditions, especially in underserved rural areas. The project focuses on screening camps, community outreach, and free treatment, including surgeries for children with serious eye conditions. This successful camp highlights the urgent need for pediatric eye care in rural communities. Moving forward, Project ROSHANI will expand its outreach, ensuring every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity for a clear and healthy vision.
