Don’t close flow of water in miners

Chandigarh, September.10, 2012: The Punjab Government has issued instructions to the officers of the irrigation department for the 24X7 vigilance of the embankments of Canals and miners.

Officers have also been asked to sensitise the farmers against blocking the water outlets emerging from miners to irrigate their fields, on their own.

Disclosing this here today, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Irrigation) Sohan Singh Thandal said that the department has taken strong exception of the reports of breach in miners in some parts of Punjab. He said that the areas, where the breach in miners occurred, had witnessed heavy rain during past some days.

He further said that it has been noticed that in case of heavy rain farmers used to close the water outlets, emerging from miners to irrigate their fields, on its own. He said that this obstruction leads to increase in water level in the miner, which aggravates with the rain water. He said that in this situation the pressure on the miner's embankment increases, which resulted in breach in the miner.

Further, he said that the officers of the department have been asked to sensitise the farmers against blocking water outlet from the miner on its own without intimating the irrigation department. He said that officers would depute mate and baildars to ensure 24X7 vigilance of miners’ and Canals’ embankments.
