Dr. B. N. Goswamy Commemorative Meet at Panjab University
Chandigarh, January 22, 2024: In memory of the acclaimed internationally known art historian Dr. B. N. Goswamy, who passed away in November 2023,the Panjab University is holding a Commemorative Meet on 23rdJanuary, 2024.The founding Chairperson of the Department of Art History and Visual Arts he served as Dean of University Instruction and was Professor Emeritus in Art History at the University.Dr. Goswamy's research straddles several areas from Indian Painting to aesthetic theory onwards to modern art movements. In recognition of his immense research output and path breaking work, the Government of India bestowed Dr. Goswamy with Padma Shri in 1998 and Padma Bhushan in 2008.
At the occasion, in remembrance, the well-known Bharatanatyam exponent Malavika Sarukkai and the celebrated author William Dalrymple will give a performance and talk, respectively. Sarukkai, who has been honoured by the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2002 and the nation's prestigious Padma Shri in 2003, will present a dance choreography titled Celebrating Myth in Miniature Painting that is a tribute to B N Goswamy’s immense contribution to the corpus of knowledge on Indian painting through his research. William Dalrymple, the trained historian from Scotland, is a writer, broadcaster, curator and critic. A much awarded writer, some of the books he has authored are White Mughals, The Last Mughal: The Fall of a Dynasty, Delhi 1857, The Return of a King: The First Battle for Afghanistan 1839-42 and The Anarchy. He will give a talk titled Taking Forward BNG’s Legacy – Forgotten Masters: Indian Painting for the East India Company which moves forward B N Goswamy’s seminal work on lifting the cloak of anonymity off Indian miniature painters. The programme is scheduled at 4pm at the University Auditorium near Arts block IV.
