Dr. Gagan Deep dispels myths on knee replacement surgery

Chandigarh, May 14, 2022: As many as 100 members of Senior Citizen Association, Modern Housing Complex (MHC), Manimajra attended a health talk on the benefits of knee replacement surgery at MHC Community Center on Saturday.
The talk was organized by Shalby Hospital, Mohali wherein its senior consultant of orthopedics & joint replacement, Dr. Gagan Deep Gupta dispelled various myths about replacement surgery.
Dr Gupta said that with advanced techniques like stitch less & painless (SLPL) now, joint replacement surgery is almost painless during operation and further scale of pain after the operation has also dropped by 90%. It is now managed with continuous epidural analgesia, said Dr. Gupta.
In SLPL no metal or thread stiches are applied on outer skin and is cosmetically also better as the marks are almost negligible, said Dr. Gupta who has successfully operated 500 joints with stich less technique.
The stitch less procedure not only serves a cosmetic purpose but adds to the strength
and protection to the incision there by preventing the patient from surgical site infection, he informed.
Dr. Gagan advised that since knee replacement falls in a major surgery category, patients should choose the operating facility with good cardiology and medical ICU backup in case of any adverse event.
Patients should avoid walking immediately after the surgery as there can be a chance of fall or loss of implant.
Physiotherapy and the role of a good physiotherapy is definitely required as to bring the required range of motion and to tune the thigh and calf muscle. A daily physiotherapy session for two to three weeks brings very fast results.
Squatting or sitting and cross legs should be avoided as there can be chances of loosening of implants.
Meanwhile a medical and bone mineral density checkup camp was also organized during the occasion. Among others Subash Chander Luthra, president of association was also present during the talk.
