Do exercise jog, run, walk, swim; maintain general good health; avoid cigarette smoking and gutka” are the words of Dr Navdeep Singh; one of the top most Oncologist of Ludhiana; to create awareness regarding prevention from cancer. As the people and medical fraternity from across the globe will celebrate on 4th February to mark ‘World Cancer Day’, Dr Navdeep took this initiative to inform more and more citizens about changing their lifestyle to stay away from this life threatening hazard.

February 4 is celebrated as the ‘World Cancer Day’all over the world to create awareness among people about cancer and its treatment. This year’s theme is “CANCER – DID YOU KNOW”.  Using this theme, Dr Navdeep Singh, Head of Cancer Department, Ludhiana Mediways Hospital, Ludhiana took the initiative to create awareness that; “It’s still a prevalent misconception in the society that cancer is incurable and the patients don’t live a normal lifestyle after treatment. Medical science has made tremendous breakthroughs in last few years and treatments are now available for diseases which were earlier thought to be untreatable. The only issue remaining now is to make people aware of the importance of early detection of the disease so it can be treated effectively.

Expressing some remedies to avoid this deadly disease Dr Navdeep said, "Prevention is better than cure, don’t allow enemy to enter your body. Take Cancer Safe diet like Green leafy vegetables, salads, fresh fruits, tomatoes, turmeric and green tea etc. Say no to cancer prone diet like Tobacco, cigarette and gutka; which are the root cause cancer of lips, mouth, tongue, lungs, bladder. Chances of Colon (intestine) cancer are increased with regular consumption of Non-Veg and red meat, whereas Alcohol and Beer which affect liver are the causative agent for Liver cancer. While the most common type of cancer among men are neck, lungs, prostate and gall bladder cancer, women mostly suffer from cancer in breast, cervix, uterus, ovary and gall bladder cancer.”

Dr. Navdeepalso emphasized strongly on Breast Cancer which is most widespread form of cancer among women. He said,  “Women over the age of 40 years should absolutely get an X- ray done of their breasts, the technique also known as Mammography. It is a very simple non-invasive test and costs just around Rs 800 – Rs 900, and can prevent from sending lacks on the treatment if detected later. One reason for breast cancer is opting for delayed pregnancies among couples in today’s high paced life. Increased reluctance to breast feeding after delivery is also becoming a major cause of the disease. There is a general misconception that breast feeding leads to sagging of breasts which is not entirely true. Women can also do a self test and if they find any lump or any hard area, they should immediately consult a cancer specialist as detection of breast cancer in early stages if curable.”

Finally, on the eve of World Cancer Day, Dr. Navdeep Singh concluded by saying “I advised people that they can make changes in their lifestyle for reducing the chances of getting cancer. One should develop an exercise routine in daily schedule. They should increase the percentage of leafy and green vegetables in daily food intake. Also, daily consumption of garlic, tomatoes and turmeric is very healthy as these have anti-cancer properties and it reduces the chances of getting cancer.”
